Reindeer and Caribou: Are They the Same?

Although reindeer and caribou are from the same species - Rangifer tarandus, there is a slight difference between them. The birth land of Caribou is in North America, while reindeer come from Northern Europe. People used to get confused when they saw these two animals. Sometimes we think that reindeer are more gentle than caribou. But this is not always true. Both animals can migrate for long distances.

Where Do Reindeer Live?

The home for arctic reindeer is the rigid polar region. This includes the area of North America, North Europe, and Siberia. So, how can you observe a reindeer? These fabulous arctic mammals have hooves and antlers that make them crowned animals of the North Pole.

Some of the arctic reindeer subspecies create clicking noises with their knees to stay connected in a windy blizzard. There is also one interesting fact about reindeer - they have their unique voices and can communicate within a herd.


What Do Reindeer Feed on?

It is hard to survive in rigid arctic conditions. It might get even more challenging for animals, who are herbivores, and eat mainly plants. They are not the exception here. Icy cold winters are one of the hardest seasons for them. Reindeer should find some grass to eat, sweeping away ice and snow with their antlers. They migrate and travel long distances to feed themselves, (more than 600 miles every year).

They also feed on mushrooms, mosses, fungi, and leaves. So for reindeer, if you want to bring something yummy, take carrots or apples with you as they love these sweet treats.

How Many Species of Reindeer Exist?

There are 14 subspecies of reindeer, and two of them are dead (Dawson’s and East Greenland caribou). You have a unique chance to see the most frequent guests of this region – Svalbard reindeer during your trip around the Arctic. On average they are quite small, with a size between 1.5-1.6 meters and a weight of 65 kg. Svalbard reindeer have white fur one on the belly and brown fur on the back, which sets them apart from other species. You can easily take a beautiful photo of these lovely mammals when you spot them among snowy hills.

Do Reindeer Have a Red Nose?

Perhaps everyone must have watched the cartoon or read a book about Rudolph, a reindeer with a red nose. However, once you browse the net to look at reindeer photos, rarely we find these animals with red-colored noses. So in reality, do reindeer have them? Yes, they do. Scientists discovered that reindeer have more than 25 percent nasal capillaries compared to humans. It helps them to regulate body temperature in the conditions of icy cold weather in the Arctic.
